A Medicare plan review means this: you check whether the plan you have now will still cover your doctors, your prescriptions and your costs next year. It takes about 20 minutes, and the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7, is when you can act on what you find.
I’m Scott Bowling, an independent Medicare broker in Round Rock, Texas, working with clients in Georgetown, Sun City Texas, Austin and across Williamson County. Here are the four things I check with every client.
1. Are your doctors still in network?
Networks change every year. If your primary care doctor or a specialist leaves your plan’s network on January 1, you could be paying out-of-network costs, or paying everything yourself. Check every doctor and hospital by name, not just “my doctor takes my insurance.”
2. Are your prescriptions still covered?
Drug lists change too. A medication can move to a higher cost tier, pick up a prior authorization requirement, or drop off the list. Look up each drug on the plan’s 2027 list, not 2026’s.
3. What will the whole year cost you?
A $0 premium isn’t the same as $0 cost. Add up premiums, copays for your usual visits and drugs, and the out-of-pocket maximum. That total is the number to compare plans on.
4. What isn’t covered at all?
Original Medicare doesn’t cover most routine dental, vision or hearing care. Many Medicare Advantage plans include some dental, but usually not enough for crowns or implants. And a hospital stay still carries daily copays on most Medicare Advantage plans. I bring that up at the start of every conversation, because coverage like hospital indemnity or a cancer plan has to be in place before you need it.
When to keep your plan, and when to switch
If all four checks come back clean, keeping your plan can be the right call. If one of them doesn’t, you have until December 7 to make a change for January 1. After that, your options narrow.
